2020-21 Memorial School Advanced Class/Honors Information

May 6, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Eatontown Public School District recognizes that students with advanced academic proficiency have educational needs that differ from their peers.  While these students require the foundational knowledge of the academic standards for their grade level, additionally, they require learning experiences that challenge them and are appropriate to their unique academic needs.  Equally important is the need to develop socially by interacting with other students.  Therefore, the district is committed to providing educational options that support and extend the regular school program through an advanced program course opportunity for English Language Arts and Mathematics.

Criteria has been established to identify students who demonstrate excellence in Mathematics and English/Language Arts. In addition to grades, multiple measures such as district benchmarks and a student readiness survey will be completed by appropriate teaching staff.  This year, due to restrictions caused by the pandemic, the standards-based assessment aligned with the Common Core State Standards will not be used to determine student eligibility.   In addition, it is important to note that the NJSLA assessment has not been used as part of the eligibility criteria in years past, and will not be for the 2020-2021 school year.

Students will be eligible to place into the Advanced English Language Arts and Mathematics Programs on an individual basis.  In other words, students can be placed into one program without making it into the other program.  However, students who meet the eligibility criteria for both programs will be placed in both programs.  In addition, students already in the Advanced Program will remain in the program as long as they continue to make satisfactory progress in the future.

Moreover, current seventh graders will be revaluated using the same criteria mentioned above to determine their eligibility for the program in 2020-21.  This measure will afford an opportunity for current seventh graders, not previously selected to be in the program, to gain admittance. It is our goal to notify students and their families of their placement status for the 2020-21 Advanced Program prior to June 18, 2020.

Thank you for your interest and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Jay Medlin
