Dear Parent/Guardian:

The New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) is the State assessment for all public school students in Grades 3-8. The purpose of this test is to provide the school district with valuable information regarding the status of instruction in the Eatontown Public Schools and to assess student achievement of the New Jersey State Learning Standards in Language Arts, Mathematics and Science. From May 13, 2024 to May 17, 2024, Eatontown Public School students in grades 3-8 will be taking the Language Arts and Mathematics NJSLA assessments. On May 20 and May 21, 2024, students in grades 5 and 8 will be taking the Science NJSLA assessments.

Under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, 95% of all students in grades 3-8 in a district are required to be tested annually. The U.S. Department of Education stated that the recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), retains the requirement that states must assess all students. Districts and schools that do not meet the standard will need to implement a corrective action plan and could possibly risk a loss of federal funding. Please note that testing time has been reduced when compared to previous test administrations.

The dates the NJSLA assessments will be administered are as follows:

Grades 3-8 ELA--------- May 13-14 Make-Up testing---May 15-30

Algebra 1---------May 15-16 Make-Up testing---May 18-30

Grades 3-8 Math--------May 15-17 Make-Up testing---May 18-30

Grades 5 & 8 Science---May 20 & 21 Make-Up testing---May 22-30

While students cannot study for these tests, it is important that they be prepared by getting a good night’s rest and having a hearty breakfast. Please make every effort to ensure your child’s attendance during this time period. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Tiffany Boufford, Director of Elementary and Secondary Education K-4

Tara Micciulla, Director of Elementary and Secondary Education 5-8
