Extended School Year Services

Extended School Year (ESY) services are provided for students with exceptional needs who require special education and related services in excess of the regular academic year. These students have disabilities which, if school is interrupted for long periods of time, are likely to cause regression above and beyond what normally occurs during the summer. In addition, it has been proven over time that the student’s period of recoupment of learned skills is longer than would be anticipated given the student’s condition.

Extended School Year services are typically provided during the summer months. In Eatontown Public Schools, these services are provided following the same calendar and time schedule as the district’s Summer Learning Academy. However, Extended School Year services are not the same as the district’s Summer Learning Academy program. Extended School Year services provide specialized instruction or related services that are part of a student’s Individual Educational Program (IEP) and are provided at no cost to the student’s family ensuring students are receiving a free appropriate public education (FAPE).
